A new study on teenagers in the UK revealed a real shift in ambitions from the days of wanting to be lawyers or doctors, now 75% said they want to be content creators, such as You Tubers. It is quite staggering but this is where the world is going – we all want a voice and to have the ability to influence.
Most bloggers and vloggers treat it as a hobby and hold onto reaching 1,000 subscribers on You Tube so that they can make some money from monetising via the You Tube advert initiative. This is not the way to make good money unless you are a minority who can command crazy high viewing figures.
How can you best make money?
I started blogging and vlogging a couple of years ago now and created a number of platforms to distribute my content. A website, a You Tube channel, a Facebook page, weekly eNewsletter, Twitter and Instagram page. I am a local Kent lad at heart but now live and work in Thailand – here is my website so you can see what it looks like: Dan about Thailand.
My blogging/vlogging hobby – as I have a full time job – takes up around 8 hours a week of my time and makes me £750 net a month. So it is a nice bit of extra pocket money and I enjoy it. I have found the best way to make money is firstly by selling advertising directly yourself and then secondly GoogleAd banners from your website – it is much easier to get web traffic than You Tube traffic in my opinion and so quicker to monetise.
What you also need to do is work each piece of content hard, so don’t just produce a vlog and upload that content to your You Tube channel but upload directly to your Facebook page and also embed into a post for your website too. That is just for starters.
Remember Facebook have a monetisation programme once your page reaches 10,000 followers, then you can apply to their Facebook Watch. So don’t rest all your laurels on You Tube. Instagram TV is very interesting but it is a landscape format so you need to create a different video format to that which you would use on You Tube which is the traditional landscape.
How Inspire Kent can help
Inspire Kent would be delighted to aggregate your content so both parties win. What do I mean by that? Well if you have your own You Tube channel Inspire Kent can publish your vlog in a post and you still get viewing credits, can serve banners and drive new subscribers to your page. You only need to look at your You Tube dashboard to see the referral traffic to prove this. Here is how it looks on my site when aggregating another vloggers content – Vlog Post on Dan about Thailand.
With a blog we can publish 75% of your blog and then put a link at the bottom so the reader needs to click across to your website to read the rest. So, Inspire Kent migrates incremental new traffic to your site. You can look at your Google Analytics referral traffic and see exactly how much more traffic Inspire Kent has generated for you.
Inspire Kent has a website, social networks and a weekly newsletter – all of which drive reach and get your content seen by more people. You will grow because of this.
If you would like to try for yourself email firstname.lastname@example.org and send a link to your You Tube channel or website. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
