Site’s past, present and future honoured with time capsule

Pupils from Brenchley and Matfield Primary School helped mark the start of construction at Fernham Homes’ new Rosewood Place development in Matfield this week with a time capsule burial. The schoolchildren were joined at the ground-breaking ceremony by the chair of the parish council, councillor Lynne Butler.

The guests were asked to contribute an array of different items to place in the time capsule which represented the local area and honoured the site’s history. These included newspapers from the day, photos of the local area, and letters written by the children in their history lessons about their experience of living through lockdown.

Covid letters for future generations

Paul Rosbrook, operations director at Fernham Homes, says: “The time capsule burial was the perfect way to mark the commencement of the development and honour the history of the area, and to be doing this on the day lockdown restrictions eased was really special, particularly being able to include the children’s letters for future generations to read about their experiences during the Covid pandemic. We are creating a new community at our Rosewood Place development, but it is important to us to celebrate the one which already exists in the area, and we hope this ground-breaking event has done just that.”

The head boy and head girl from Brenchley and Matfield Primary school, as well as their deputies, attended the ceremony on behalf of the school.

“Our pupils really enjoyed contributing towards the time capsule. Hopefully, local residents of the future will have fun looking through the contents of the time capsule when it is eventually dug up in the years to come.”

Jane Mallon, headteacher at Brenchley and Matfield Primary School

Cllr Lynne Butler said: “I’d like to thank Fernham Homes for inviting me to this ceremony. As chair of the parish council, I am committed to representing the community of Brenchley and Matfield and events such as this one provide an opportunity to celebrate the past, present and future residents of Matfield.”

Construction at Fernham Homes’ Rosewood Place will start soon. Once complete, the development will consist of 45 three-, four- and five-bedroom homes.
