With less than a few weeks to go until the 2019/20 league 1 kick-off and with the Gills busy in the close season, it promises an interesting season ahead. Can they then be pushing for promotion come end of season though, that is the question?
First off they have a new manager at the helm in the way of seasoned veteran Steve Evans and they have made some promising signings too. However losing star striker Tom Eaves could hurt them.
usy in the transfer market
In total Gills welcome 9 players to the club, 6 on a free transfer and 3 loans. Matty Wilcock arriving on a free from Manchester United possibly the pick of the bunch, but he comes with a huge question mark due to many observers commenting on his poor performance last season on loan at St.Mirren. However at 22 years old and Gills plying their trade in league one, this move could suit both parties and bring out the best in him. Time will tell.
On paper, the arrival of Ousseynou Cisse on a free from MK Dons looks good. He is valued as Gillingham’s most expensive player according to transfermkt.co.uk at £630,000.
So how will Gillingham perform this season?
Gills are 5/1 for relegation (with 8 clubs given a greater chance of being relegated) against 66/1 for title contenders, which seems a tad unfair given the credibility of their new manager and their ambitious new squad additions.
Gillingham could very well turn out surprise contenders for play off positions with more likely a solid mid-table position beckoning.
Given the changes at the club it certainly creates much anticipation for Gills fans throughout the county.
