10 Christmas ideas (Pt 2): Gifts

Some are weird (well, off the wall), some wonderful and another is socially-distanced plain crackers

What type of present giver are you? Personally, I give money to my sons. Yes, I know it’s a cop-out. But, I defend myself by saying that, at least they get what they want. I hate that “will they be taking it back next week to get it part-exchanged?” feeling when present recipients try to convince you it’s “something I’ve always wanted”.

Fortunately for the companies involved in this blog not everyone spends their Christmases muttering “Bah, humbug” to anyone who will listen. Some really do put lots of thought into the presents they buy. So what’s your preference? Weird? Whacky? Just plain crackers? Or do you like to choose something safe and cheerful (though not necessarily cheap)? Whatever, I hope you find something to your taste here in this 10.

1 Gift voucher for a room overhaul consultation

A bit off the wall this one. But if you know someone who has recently moved house (as I do) then consider this house-warming cum Christmas gift. If fact, this will work just as well – maybe better – for someone who has been in a property for a long time and is in need of inspiration.

Interior designer Benji Lewis, who is the founder of Zoom That Room, a virtual interior design service created during lockdown, is offering gift e-vouchers for video consultations for the chance to completely transform any room in the house. Most people have had to adapt very fast to working at home and rely on video interaction rather than face-to-face engagement. Therefore it has become a time to rethink our homes, and address a total change in how we live and work. After Christmas, it could mean that the majority of the country would’ve been working from home for nearly 10 months, and therefore certain rooms may start to feel tired, repetitive, or even claustrophobic and in need of a refresh.

A one-hour home consultation costs from £90 per Zoomed room. Via whichever video communications platform you choose (FaceTime/Zoom etc.), you can dial in with Benji and discuss your interior design issues and aspirations in return for tailored advice for you and your room.

Benji can host sessions with people across all types of property and locations – from studio flats to country retreats. He is known for his creative, thoughtful but accessible and non-judgemental approach and is much sought-after as a designer.

2 Richard Osman’s House of Games board game

I hope Richard Osman will not be offended when I say I regard him as a bit of a Marmite man – you either love him or hate him. A Fulham fan, but I can forgive him that. I like him a lot. And, whatever your thoughts about Osman, this game looks like a Christmas winner. Based on the hit BBC2 show which recently made an appearance on BBC1, the House of Games board game is the ultimate test of knowledge and skill. Enjoy some of your favourite challenges from the show in the comfort of your home. Team up to tackle some trivia or face off against each other in the iconic Answer Smash. Who will be the House of Games champion in this competitive compendium of games?

Created by the team at Ginger Fox, this game will provide hours of fun and hours of bragging rights to the winners. The Ginger Fox Richard Osman’s House of Games Board Game costs £25 from John Lewis.

10 Sporty stocking fillers

For those that are struggling to find the perfect present for their particularly sporty family and friends, the gift of energy may be what you are looking for.

More than 80% of the world’s population consumes at least one caffeinated product each day, to mask fatigue, increase alertness and improve focus and concentration. It is also a way to boost performance in the gym, on a run or during any physical activity. At every level of sport and exercise, caffeine offers a helping hand to get started or go further. Now, the caffeine delivery system used by some of the top names in international sports, from the UK’s top female marathon runners – including this year’s champion Natasha Cockram – to some of Australia’s top sports teams, is available to buy through the Amazon.

Revvies energy strips, which contain either 40mg or 100mg of caffeine in each serving – roughly equivalent to either a cup of tea or coffee respectively, are sugar-free, vegan and gluten-free. The strips dissolve on the tongue and take effect in 5-10 minutes without being as hard on the stomach as caffeine pills or gels.

Ten packs of five strips are available from Amazon in two flavours for £25 while five packs of five are available for £13.50.
