A tweet by @ellieeewbu caused some concern recently when she tweeted; “ATTENTION ALL GIRLS ALL GIRLS!!! Go to your photos and type in the ‘Brassiere’ why are apple saving these and made it a folder!!?!!?”.

The tweet was retweeted more than 15,000 times but it seems that there is an innocent explanation. Since iOS10 was introduced on the iPhone, the device has been able to recognise over 4,000 objects and it appears that bras are one of them. This is all down to Apple’s sophisticated AI which has learnt to recognise images from a library containing hundreds of thousands of already labelled pictures.

Impressively, the AI can even recognise different breeds of dog such as a dachshund or a corgi.

When Express.co.uk tested out the system using different keywords, it was indeed able to recognise corgis and meat but don’t worry, they weren’t stored away in a secret folder.

Users are advised not to be concerned as the image detection is carried out by the iPhone and every device runs its own unique version of AI. This means that all you images will remain private – unless you choose the share them.

Google on the other hand, saves all Google Photos in the cloud and the vast majority of object recognition is conducted there.

Apple have a page on their website which details how the Photos app in iOS can easily “find photos of an exact person, place, or thing”.

They explained: “Advanced face recognition and computer vision technology lets you search your photos by who and what’s in them.”

The Cupertino based tech giant added: “When you search your photos, all of the face recognition and scene and object detection are done completely on your device.”
